Vox Hunt: Play On

Comments

[this is good]
Right on. When I saw the question, I thought, "I learned to play anything that interested me" but you've nailed it: I wish I could play the fiddle with absolutely no work on my own part. :)

Got the eldest niece on it, though. W00t!
I've never learned how to play any instruments or how to read music. It's something I wished I expressed more interest in as a child because my brother had music lessons - my mom said she never knew I'd wanted to learn. In school I always opted for art classes instead and then in college I never managed to fit into my schedule. Someday though! *shakes fist*

That's great you got your niece into it!
It's never too late. When I was going to uni, one lady was 88 years old. If you're going to learn, what do you think first off? Like... have you and interest in all music? I'd recommend piano because in my head, it's just the basic thing. If you're good at maths, you'll take to it like crazy. I literally have a learning disability, so at my height of music theory, it was training and repetition. Without the repetition, all ability leaves me. It's not the "like a bicycle" thing people say unless you really "get" that mathematic code. Go for it!
That was "an interest in all music," not and interest. Starting at violin would be hard I think (hence my fear of it!).
Better late than never! I think I'd start with the violin because I have them available or the guitar because they are relatively cheap and easy to buy. Guitar seems like it'd be easier to me...the piano has all those keys!
I understand having something there, that's too true! Instruments are costly, especially if you're not sure you want to stick with it. The thing with piano is it's only a repetition of CDEFGAB (black keys are half steps, sharp and flat but never mind that). That's the way a scale goes but it's about the layout.

The fretboard or neck of a violin or guitar are more confusing (at least to me); while still repeating notes, they're not arranged in as straightforward a manner. Your "whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole half" won't be in the same places for each string where it is always the same just farther up or down on a keyboard.

Hope those links work!
Yeah, I guess that makes sense...kind of. I've had virtually no musical training, well, other than learning how to play "Mary Has a Little Lamb" on the recorder, so it's a little over my head. And the links did work! Thank you!
You can do it :)
